This view centers on a church with a distinctive central entrance tower topped with a two-layered cupola supporting a rooster weather vane. The print may have been made to illustrate H. L. Everett's "Historic Churches of America: Their Romance and Their History" (Philadelphia, 1890-94). Evoking the quiet an earllier time, the artist shows the church surrounded by trees, and a fence, with figures strollingand the street devoid of traffice. Below, there is a remarque of a man wearing seventheenth-century dress. An 1869 oil by Edward Lamson Henry in the Met's American Wing (15.30.66) also shows the North Dutch Church which had been dedicated in 1769 and demolished in 1875.
