Square scarf: Les Rivières de Babel
Annie Faivre French
Not on view
The architecture in Annie Faivre’s playful design is based on fantastic depictions of the Tower of Babel in European art and is particularly close to an engraving in Athanasius Kircher’s 1679 Turris Babel (2023.718). The Neoclassical Tower is populated by creatures drawn from ancient Near Eastern, Greek and Roman, and Indian art. Faivre’s designs for Hermès have included other ancient and mythological themes, including Zenobia, queen of Palmyra, and ancient nomadic art of the Eurasian Steppe.
