This triptych by Kuniyoshi depicts a popular episode from a serial novel that was published for twenty-eight years, beginning in 1814. Hakkenden (Tale of eight dogs) tells the story of eight fictional warriors of the medieval age. This scene captures the men fighting after having been cornered on the roof of a building, the Hōryūkaku.
