Tripod incense burner with archaistic patterns

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 210

This censer demonstrates the continued importance of antiquarianism among patrons of Yaozhou stoneware during the twelfth century, when most of north China was under the rule of the Jurchen Jin dynasty. The form, the decor, and even the pale green glaze recall ancient bronze tripod cauldrons. This finely molded ceramic, however, has been given a new function as an incense burner.
