Martial Potémont was among the founding members of the Société des Aquafortistes (Society of Etchers), established by the publisher Alfred Cadart in 1862 to generate renewed interest in etching. This suite of four plates with a frontispiece takes the form of a letter describing and illustrating the technique. Both propagandistic and instructive, the letter depicts and explains the necessary tools, noting where they might be procured, as well as the various steps of the process: the preparation of the plate with a ground, etching, biting, printing of proofs, and retouching if needed. A decade later, in 1873, the artist published a more traditional treatise on etching in book form (Ref.7097).
