The annual Mexican celebration known as Día de Muertos bridges the worlds of the living and the dead through music, memory, and family. Pixar’s popular feature film Coco (2017) captures its spirit and explores the vital role of music in remembrance. The lead character’s quest to uncover his true family history begins when he seizes his idol’s guitar from the grave. Decorated with sugar skull motifs, the instrument serves as a conduit between the living and the dead. Its key role prompted Pixar to partner with Tim Miklaucic, Founder and CEO of Córdoba Guitars, who selected Master Luthier German Vazquez Rubio to create iterations of the Coco guitar. Throughout the story, the guitar serves to unleash memories, particularly through performances of the ballad "Recuérdame" (Remember Me). The film sparked a revival of traditional Mexican guitar making and playing.
