Poster for a performance by Henri Huerta

1871
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 199
This depiction of the violinist Henri Huerta is a particularly well rendered caricature in a rare large format. It is illustrative of the widespread popularity of touring instrumental virtuosi during the late nineteenth century who sought to memorably advertise themselves in a crowded marketplace. It speaks powerfully and playfully to the evocative links between the form of the violin and the human body.
