Portrait of Anatole France

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen French, born Switzerland

Not on view

In 1903, Steinlen mounted a major retrospective exhibition and asked his friend, the celebrated author Anatole France (1844-1924), to write the preface for the catalogue. This drawing is preparatory to a portrait of the writer that the artist published to accompany the text. In it, France described Steinlen's draftsmanship as embued with "a subtle, lively, attentive sensibility, an infallible visual memory, and a rapid means of expression," qualities evident in this quick sketch.
