Ansoumana Diédhiou Senegalese

Not on view

Le roi du Fogny by Ansoumana Diédhiou depicts the king of the Fogny region in southern Senegal, honoring the traditional power structures that persisted through colonization and independence. The tapestry features the king wearing a cowrie-shell crown and holding a scepter, with a kneeling subject presenting gifts. Diédhiou, a prolific designer at the Manufactures sénégalaises des arts décoratifs in Thiès, draws on his Casamance heritage, using tapestry to capture local cultural traditions. This work is a striking example of Diédhiou’s mastery and the rich cultural identity of the Casamance region.
