Prints play an important role in Kiki Smith's oeuvre and are practices she has engaged repeatedly over many decades with a wide variety of printmakers and publishers. Marking her work is a desire to experiment with new practices, materials, and methods. In addition to more traditional printmaking technique, Smith has embraced such unconventional methods as those associated with various kinds of digital printmaking, pigmented inkjet, photocopying¸ rubber stamps, and collage. In these soft ground etchings, cut-out forms of stars and other shapes are visible against an atmospheric background as Smith explores the effects of color, material, and concentration.
