Griffin Protome

Greek

Not on view

This griffin would have been one of a group of protomes that decorated the shoulder of a large bronze cauldron. Such elaborate vessels, frequently dedicated in sanctuaries such as those at Samos, Olympia, and Delphi, were among the preeminent creations of Greek artists from the eighth to the sixth century BCE. This example, likely found in Spain, may have been imported to the region or produced by Greek craftsmen who had settled there.
