Buddha, Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani
Not on view
This majestically enthroned Buddha and the two premier Buddhist saviors, the bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani, are rare survivors from early 9th century Central Java. This ensemble reflects contemporary practice across Buddhist Asia at a time when triads had assumed a special place as the religious system expanded to accommodate an increasingly important role assigned to savior deities, both bodhisattvas and taras. The most immediate precedent for such triads is the monumental suite of stone images that occupy the central sanctuary of the Central Javanese royal-endowed temple, Candi Mendut, built around 800 CE.
