Este excepcional cesto de sobremesa fue realizado para el acaudalado comerciante antillano Samuel Cornell y su esposa Susannah, residentes en la ciudad de Nueva York y en New Bern, Carolina del Norte. Tras ser nombrado miembro del Consejo Provincial de Carolina del Norte, Cornell encargó varios objetos al eminente platero neoyorquino Myer Myers. Según indica una inscripción en la parte inferior del cesto, los Cornell lo regalaron posteriormente a su hija Hannah, que se casó con Herman LeRoy el 19 de octubre de 1786. Con sus secciones caladas, bordes gallonados y asa de rejilla con bisagras, este cesto es comparable a las más elegantes piezas de plata londinense.
