Scenes from the Life of Christ

Painted by an artist much influenced by Giotto di Bondone (both worked in the city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast of Italy in the early 1300s), this picture once had a companion panel. Hinged together, they formed a diptych with scenes from the Life of Christ upon which to meditate. The narrative begins with Christ taken down from the cross and reaches a climax in the Last Judgment. At the top, Jesus crowns his mother Mary in heaven (the Coronation); the four saints must have had special importance to the person who commissioned the painting. Although damaged, the picture is notable for its delicacy, clarity of composition, and strong figural construction.
