El capitán George K. H. Coussmaker (1759–1801)

En 1776, Coussmaker se enroló en el Primer Regimiento de Guardias de Infantería como alférez y teniente. Con el tiempo ascendió a teniente coronel y en 1795 dejó el ejército sin haber participado nunca en una acción militar. En 1782 Reynolds dejó constancia de veintiuna sesiones de pose con el joven militar, y unas ocho sesiones para pintar el caballo. Según la diarista Fanny Burney, Coussmaker era tímido y callado pero bien educado. Su retrato está pintado con gran libertad y soltura en el mejor estilo de Reynolds, y al parecer sin la intervención de los asistentes del taller del artista.
