Man

Andy Warhol American
ca. 1960–62
Not on view
The man holding a pipe is unidentified but likely was copied from a photographic source; magazine and newspaper reproductions often provided the material for Warhol's images of current events and famous personalities. While most of his painted and printed portraits are brightly colored, this drawing retains the grisaille tones of a black-and-white photograph. Self-portraits and portraits of the artist's friends and acquaintances were a theme in his oeuvre for more than thirty years. The intense amount of pencil work in this portrait, however, suggests that it predates his first use of photomechanical silkscreening in 1963.
