Dutār

ca. 1860
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681
The dutār of Iran and Central Asia usually has two strings. This example is elaborately decorated with silver and brass appliqués that decorate the bowlback body and neck. Originally, the instrument was strung with silk, but today most dutārs have nylon strings.
