Femina ex Ischia

Engraving, part of 'Habitus variarum orbis gentium' (Costumes of the various peoples of the world), representing the costumes of men and women from various parts of the world, engraved after designs by Boissard and published by Rutz in 1581.

This engraving represents three women from Ischia. On the left, the first woman wears a high-waisted, long robe with long, wide sleeves and layers of draped fabric, a turban and a long, scallop-edged veil that covers her shoulders and back.

On the center, the second woman wears a robe with long, wide sleeves, with a sort of cape with two layers, one of them with fringed edges, and both with geometric patterns, and her head wrapped in a scallop-edged scarf with patter that matches that on the upper cape. She holds tools on her hands.

On the right, the third woman wears a robe with long, wide sleeves and a high waist, marked with ruffles. An apron hangs at the front of the skirt, and the back of the robe is made by a double-layered cape. Her hair is wrapped in a scarf with scalloping edges and a pattern with scrolling motifs.
