The Düsseldorf Gallery opened in 1849 at 548 Broadway, New York and was established to promote painters who had trained in Germany. In the fall of 1857 the gallery was acquired by the Cosmopolitan Art Association, an organization supported by subscribers. For an annual charge of three dollars members received unrestricted admission to the gallery, a copy of the Association's magazine which contained an engraving such as this, and a chance to win art at the annual prize-drawing. In 1858 the grand prize was Hiram Powers's "Greek Slave," seen here in the gallery surrounded by admirers.
