Evening Sky (Båstad)
A spectacularly animated sky explodes above a dark silhouette of trees and bushes. This energetic drawing counts among the most dramatic works by Nils Kreuger. The artist began his career as a plein air painter in the impressionist style and later, inspired by the work of Gauguin and in particular Vincent van Gogh, he took on a more symbolist approach to depicting the Swedish countryside. This work was created in that spirit. He added subtle suggestions of blue and orange to the black charcoal to capture the combination of bright light and shadow and muted tones created by the specific light at dusk. In 1907, the date of this work, the artist drew and painted a number of images of the town of Båstad, a town located along the western coast of Sweden.
