The Abduction of Rebecca

Delacroix had an abiding concern for his legacy and one of the ways he hoped to ensure his reputation was through the circulation of his compositions in print. Delacroix evidently esteemed the etcher Edmond Hédouin's work, as he writes in his Journal about supplying the printmaker directly with drawings. This print is after the "Abduction of Rebecca" (03.30). Hédouin first prepared it for the periodical "L’Artiste" (October 3, 1847) following the painting’s presentation at the Salon of 1846, though this impression is likely from a later publication.
