Pastiche of Self Portrait [with Saskia] and the Artist's Mother with Her Hand on Her Chest: Small Bust

Possibly Jean de Bary
18th century (pastiche printed from two of Rembrandt's original plates)
Not on view
This eighteenth-century pastiche is printed directly from two of Rembrandt's original etching plates: the Self-portrait with Saskia and the so-called Artist's Mother with Her Hand on Her Chest. These images are creatively combined to feature the artist's self-portrait, sketching pad, and signature from the former and the elderly woman from the latter, resulting in a new, invented double portrait of Rembrandt and the woman long supposed to have been his mother. As Erik Hinterding has discussed, this pastiche is probably the work of Amsterdam dealer Jean de Bary (d. 1759), who owned both plates.
See other impressions of this pastiche in the British Museum, Rijksmuseum, Louvre, Albertina, and Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.
