Miguel Luciano: Cemí-Libre Block Party Celebration

Free

Join Civic Practice Partnership Artist-in-Residence Miguel Luciano for a block party celebrating the exhibition Cemí-Libre, on view at Hope Community Inc.'s Galería del Barrio. The exhibition features work Luciano produced during his three-year residency at The Met, where he explored the historic connections between the Museum and the East Harlem community. Luciano engaged deeply with the collection and archives as he researched the 1973 exhibition The Art Heritage of Puerto Rico: Pre-Columbian to Present, a collaboration between The Met and El Museo del Barrio.

Luciano's work pays homage to the activist history of East Harlem, which challenged institutions to become more inclusive and responsive, while he underscores the need for this work to continue today. At the center of Luciano's exhibition is the work Cemí-Libre, a bronze replica of a Taíno zemí cohoba stand from The Met collection.
