Witness the creation of an original work by composer and saxophonist Matthew Evan Taylor and his collaborators in this unique yearlong Met Live Arts commission. Taylor will spark the process by drafting the first layer of the composition. Each month, working remotely, a musician from the Metropolis Ensemble orchestral collective or the South Asian jazz collective RAJAS will respond to and build on that foundation. Over the course of the year, the evening-length work Life Returns will take shape, culminating in a live performance of the completed composition in March 2022.

This twelve-part series—presented on IGTV on The Met’s Instagram account and website—offers an intimate and virtually real-time view of Taylor’s creative process during the pandemic as he and his partners explore African American, South Indian, and Western European musical practices.
