Join acclaimed scholars to reflect on the work of the iconic American modernist Jacob Lawrence in conjunction with the exhibition Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle. Learn about the influence of the artistic community in Harlem on Lawrence's practice, his deep connection with American history, and the resonant themes of struggle and revolution in his work.

Kevin Young is the Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, which was recently named a National Historic Landmark, and poetry editor of The New Yorker. He is the author of thirteen books of poetry and prose, most recently Brown (Knopf, 2018) and Bunk: The Rise of Hoaxes, Humbug, Plagiarists, Phonies, Post-Facts, and Fake News (Graywolf Press, 2017), which won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Nonfiction, was longlisted for the National Book Award, and was named a New York Times Notable Book. He is the editor of nine other volumes, including the anthology African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle & Song (Library of America, October 2020). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was named a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2020.

LeRonn P. Brooks is the Associate Curator for Modern and Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. He is a specialist in African American art, poetics, performance, and Africana studies. As the lead curator for the Getty's new African American Art History Initiative, he is charged with building and developing collections to promote advanced research in African American art history.

Tammi Lawson is the Curator of the Art and Artifacts Division for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, where she is the steward of a collection of approximately fifteen thousand works of fine art and artifacts dating back to the 17th century that reflect the history and expressive culture of the African Diaspora. Lawson specializes in the preservation of cultural heritage materials, museum collections, and digital curation.
