Rectangular tray with flowering plums and magpies
The blossoming plum tree and two birds in the center of this tray reflect the skillful manipulation of inlaid mother-of-pearl to create a powerful, dramatic scene. Long, narrow lines of iridescent shell mark the terrain. Irregular pieces define the rocky outcrop at the base of the ancient tree, which bears buds in several stages of bloom. Shimmering fragments form the craggy trunk. Some flowers are depicted with frowning faces, imagery inspired by a thirteenth-century manual of plum blossoms.
