Standing Bishop
At the height of his career, Tilman Riemenschneider employed as many as twelve apprentices in his workshop. This dramatic bishop is an outstanding example of the tall, sinuous figures they produced for the elaborate carved altarpieces that were displayed in churches across southern Germany. Technical analysis has shown that the colorful paint was added later; originally, the sculpture was treated with a transparent glaze that left the bare wood visible and enhanced its rich brown tones.
