With a cool, pop-like sensibility, SSO belongs to D’Arcangelo’s series of paintings of highways and road signs from the 1960s, reflecting the artist’s vision to define the landscapes of the American experience. Here, the partial Esso gasoline sign hovering over U.S. Route 23 at night contributes to a sense of disquieting premonition.
