Rumba

The rumba is a dance of Cuban origin that repeats a basic pattern of steps to achieve rhythmic movement. Here, a woman wearing a traditional ruffle-hem dress dances with her partner at right, who holds a neck scarf that echoes the movement of the dance. In the background is the Castillo del Morro on the Port of Havana. Covarrubias spent time in New York in the early 1920s and was very familiar with the dance scene—especially in Harlem; he created other works with subjects similar to the one here. Published by the Associated American Artists, this print was part of their campaign to stimulate interest in prints, making them affordable and accessible to a wide American public.
