Daniel Boyd applies dots of archival glue, forms that he refers to as lenses, to obscure the charcoal drawing of an Aboriginal man based on an 1892 photograph by Charles Kerry. The sitter's faint contours appear and disappear amongst the raised dots that cover the entire surface. By incorporating a historical reference from Western-style portraiture into the dot painting traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Boyd challenges colonial modes of image production.
