Fan leaf for the Universal Exposition of 1889
This large-scale fan was produced by a Spanish fan maker in Valencia as a souvenir for the Universal Exhibition of 1889 in Paris. It depicts the buildings erected for the fair, which included the Eiffel Tower, shown enlarged on an unfurled map of the fairgrounds on the left bank of the Seine. A mounted version in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, illustrated below, displays the design on the reverse of the fan, which features other monuments that might have interested visitors to Paris, including the Palais de Trocadéro, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1878; the new opera house designed by Charles Garnier, inaugurated in 1875; and the Château de Versailles.
