Entro il 1866 l’ampiezza esagerata della gonna larga iniziò a venir distribuita sul lato posteriore, disposta in una serie di forme ornamentali. Qualche volta veniva aggiunta una sopraggonna separata per creare un effetto di drappeggio. Nel corso degli anni seguenti, l’enorme estensione del cerchio di crinolina in crine di cavallo o cotone che sosteneva la gonna si ridusse notevolmente sui lati, creando una figura più lineare quando osservata dal davanti. Questo abito conserva la silhouette in voga nel decennio 1860-70, introducendo al contempo un particolare sul dietro che anticipa le tournure dei due decenni seguenti.
