Powers all’inizio mostrò la sua abilità di scultore eseguendo immagini di importanti personaggi politici americani, e questo ritratto del presidente Andrew Jackson lanciò la sua carriera artistica, trascorsa in gran parte in Italia. Nel 1834 Powers si recò a Washington, D.C., dove Jackson posò per lui alla Casa Bianca. La scultura rappresenta in modo realistico il presidente, che all’epoca aveva sessantasette anni, con il volto lungo e magro profondamente segnato dalle rughe, la bocca e le guance infossate per la mancanza di denti e la fronte corrugata delimitata dai folti capelli pettinati all’ indietro. Il busto fu scolpito in marmo dopo che Powers si stabilì definitivamente a Firenze nel 1837.
