Remington grazie ai suoi quadri, illustrazioni, sculture e scritti si guadagnò la stimata reputazione di cronista per eccellenza del vecchio Far West americano. Per quest’opera, l’artista scelse un evento drammatico nella vita quotidiana di un cacciatore, mentre a cavallo scende un dirupo a picco. Sotto il peso ingombrante dell’attrezzatura — trappole per orsi, ascia, letto da campo e fucile — uomo e cavallo si aiutano a vicenda per affrontare il difficile e scosceso cammino. Questa fusione in bronzo, come le migliori statuette eseguite da Remington, è caratterizzata da una grande varietà strutturale delle superfici: dagli abiti di camoscio con le frange, al folto pelo dell’animale al piedistallo roccioso.
