Hat

Design House Schiaparelli French
Designer Elsa Schiaparelli Italian

Not on view
The doll hat and snood forms were extremely popular in the late 1930s and early '40s. The snood in particular because it served both a functional and decorative purpose by stylishly controlling women's hair while they worked during wartime. This example, however, is purely decorative. The flowers used by Schiaparelli to decorate the straw and veiling show a particular naturalism, variety and detail which indicate its couture quality. The black and navy blue combination is also very chic. The wearer, Millicent Rogers, was the epitome of style and during the 1930s and '40s, wore many of Schiaparelli's designs.
