Zaō Gongen

Zaō Gongen rappresenta un raro caso di divinità prettamente giapponese aggiunta al pantheon buddista. All’epoca in cui fu eseguita questa figura, molte pratiche religiose associate a Zaō avevano luogo in templi remoti in mezzo alle montagne. Mediante tali riti, gli asceti che vivevano sulle montagne cercavano di impadronirsi dell’immane forza fisica di Zaō.
