Vase with flowering plum

13th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 220
Flowering plum is a harbinger of spring and a traditional motif in Chinese art. To create the lively branch here, the artist covered the surface of the vase with wax (or another kind of resistant coating) before glazing. This technique is typical of Jizhou wares, which were produced in southwestern Jiangxi province. The Jizhou kilns are known for their experimentation with surface decoration.
