Questa tela eseguita intorno al 1624-25 fu creata come pala d’altare, probabilmente per una chiesa cattolica di Utrecht, città in cui il cattolicesimo era tollerato, ma non favorito. Le straordinarie qualità arcaiche del dipinto, come ad esempio la figura spigolosa del Cristo, lo spazio poco profondo e il cielo stellato, sono state accostate da molti osservatori a xilografie del Basso Medioevo, a stampe di Dürer e alla pala d’altare di Matthias Grünewald di Isenheim a Colmar, in Francia. Pare che questo dipinto sia stato eseguito per sostituire una pala d’altare precedente, danneggiata o distrutta. Dipinto con un pigmento (smalto) poco resistente alla luce, il cielo in passato aveva un tono più azzurro.
