Ruisdael dipinse spesso il tema dei campi di grano e questa grande tela del 1670 circa è la più ambiziosa rappresentazione da lui creata di tale soggetto. La composizione monumentale del disegno, occupata al centro dallo spazio che si allontana, forse fu concepita per un ambiente specifico, magari sopra una mensola di camino. Nel Seicento, quadri di notevoli dimensioni come questo venivano normalmente appesi molto in alto.
