Remembered as one of the earliest abstractionists in the Arab world, Choucair’s interests ranged from Islamic art to modernist art and architecture, as well science and mathematics, and pan-Arabist politics. This work is characteristic of her interest in modular sculpture and painting, as well as her vision of what modern Islamic or Arab (the artist employed both terms) art should accomplish. Poised at the intersection of sculpture, installation, design, and architecture, the piece fuses Bauhaus principles of interdisciplinarity and functionalism with modernist architectural concerns and Islamic art’s traditional resistance to the autonomous art object.
