Perspective, from a set of allegories of the arts and sciences with grotesque motifs on black grounds

before 1573
Not on view
Engraving, reverse copy of a print, part of a series of allegories of the arts and sciences with grotesque motifs, executed on black grounds by Étienne Delaune before 1573. This print consists of an allegory of Perspective, represented by a female figure, standing with her head three-quarters towards the left. She holds a level on the right hand and, on the left, a measuring rod and a compass, all of them appropriate instruments for the study of this science. She stands in front of a sort of platform, made up of cubes, represented in perspective. On the further corners of the platform stand two branches, flanked above by scrolling leaves and branches of laurel leaves, which intersect the scrolling leaves that flank the two branches standing on the front corners of the platform. This effect illustrates the illusionist art of perspective. On either side of the composition is an oil lamp, likely symbolizing vigilance. On the lower part of the illustration are two rabbits, possibly symbolizing carnal love. Altogether, these symbols might intend to present a warning not to get lost in illusions.
