Sledgehammers
This monotype—a unique impression of a design drawn on another surface—depicts blacksmiths wielding sledgehammers. Brightly colored inks, in combination with selective wiping, capture the light and heat of the forge as hammers hit the unseen anvil and send sparks flying. As a member of the Grosvenor School in Britain, Andrews favored scenes characterized by dynamic movement, often in the form of emphatically modern technology like automobiles and escalators. Here, she adapted her aesthetic to the natural motions of human bodies engaged in a traditional form of labor.
