Penis whistle keyring with orb charm
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Because the penis is an enduring emblem of virility and fecundity, many cultures have flutes and whistles that embody the phallic form. Vivienne Westwood drew inspiration for this whistle from the fascinus, a popular ancient Roman penis amulet that was believed to shock and repel the evil eye. With its subversion of conventional sensibilities, Westwood’s key chain echoes the amulet's function, particularly when deployed as a rape alarm.
