ドイツ生まれのビアスタットは、ロッキー 山脈を描いてアメリカ西部の画家としての揺ぎない名声を築きました。1859年、フレデリック W. ランダー大佐と共に、今日のワイオミング州とユタ州へ遠征旅行した時の記録に基づいて描かれたこの絵は、アメリカ国民にアメリカ独特のフロンティアを披露し、アメリカ人はこの大陸を開拓する天命があるという「絶対的使命」の信念をあおりたてました。前景にショショーニ族の野営地が描かれた対称的な構図は、大胆でシンプルな明暗で成り立っています。この巨大な作品が絶賛を浴びたビアスタットは、当時屈指のアメリカ風景画家、フレデリック・チャーチのライバルに位置づけられました。
