白い肌の捕虜

19世紀中頃のアメリカ彫刻は新古典様式が圧倒的な人気を博し、白い大理石の作品は古典時代の作品を想起させるものとして特に好まれました。この優美な等身大の裸像には新古典派の精神がうかがわれますが、作品自体はアメリカ原住民と白人入植者との境界争いの説話に発想を得たものと思われます。この作品は眠っていたところを誘拐された若い女性を表しており、はがされた寝巻きが木の幹に吊るされ、手が拘束されています。ニューヨーク州北部に生まれたパルマーは独学で彫刻を学び、大半の同輩とは異なり、生涯海外で勉学することはありませんでした。
