1764年にロンドンを訪れたプラットは、すでに非常な成功を収めつつあった同国人の後輩、ベンジャミン・ウェストに歓迎されました。プラットのこの独創的な作品には、ウェストがアメリカ人の青年画家たちを指導する場面が描かれています。18世紀末のロンドンでアメリカ人画家たちが踏襲していたヨーロッパの美術的伝統を型破りな構図で表そうとした作品です。1766年に「アメリカン・スクール」の題で展示されました。一番左に立って素描を指導している人物がウェスト、イーゼルの前に座り熟練した肖像画家として描かれているのがプラットです。
