スチュアートは、ジョージ・ワシントンの肖像画を描こうと決めて1793年3月にロンドンからアメリカに帰国しました。この作品は、ワシントンを右向きに描いたヴォーン・グループと呼ばれる18枚の胸像画のうちの1枚です。作品にはスチュアートがワシントンを前にして描いた最初の肖像画の形跡が残っています。黒い油彩の下には黄色のボタンの付いた赤褐色の外套が見え、スチュアートが当初のヴォーン肖像画を描いたと同時にこの絵の発想を得たことを示唆しています。彼のワシントンの肖像画は写実的でありながら同時に象徴的でもあります。この作品では、肌に青みがかった灰色の陰影を与えることにより、大理石の彫像であるかのような堂々とした印象を与えています。
