時計仕掛けの天球儀

神聖ローマ皇帝ルドルフ2世のために作られたこの天球儀には、宮廷お抱えの時計職人ゲーハード・エモサーによる時計装置(ムーヴメント)が組み込まれており、子午線の輪に製作日と署名が記されています。ムーヴメントは大幅に修復されました。当初は天球儀が回転し、黄道を太陽のシンボルが通り、球の頂点にあるダイヤルが、ひとつは時間を、もうひとつが暦を示す仕掛けでした。精巧に彫り込まれた天球部分の星座とペガサスの脚部は、ウィーンの宮廷工房に仕えていた無名の金細工師と彫刻師の手によるものと思われます。
