アンティコという名は、この彫刻師が古代の彫刻様式を復活させ、不朽のものとする彼のライフワークに対して自ら名付けた愛称です。マントヴァ出身の彼は、古典時代の彫像の大作を再現した、精巧で洗練された青銅の小像でよく知られています。作品の原型は不明ですが、力強い体躯のこの裸像は彼の作品の中で最大のものに数えられ、おそらくトロイアの王子パリスが、三美神(ヴィーナス、ジュノー、ミネルバ)のうち最も美しい女神を判定しているところを表したものと考えられます。パリスはヴィーナスを選び、金のリンゴを与えました。滑らかな肉体、繊細に彫りこまれた表情、そして金銀鍍金によるアクセントなどの特徴は、アンティコの最高傑作のブロンズ像が、初期ルネッサンスの小像の中でコレクター垂涎の作品となっている所以です。
