作品では、空気の化身としてユピテル神の姿で描かれているフランス国王ルイ14世が、稲妻と盾を手に鷲の上に座り、鳥や蝶、ホルンその他の管楽器に囲まれています。シャルル・ル・ブランが考案したとされる緻密なデザインは、銀と撚銀糸で杉綾模様と渦巻き模様を織り込んだ複雑な背景にテント・ステッチの刺繍が施されています。この作品は、国王の公妾モンテスパン侯爵夫人のために作られた8枚の壁掛け(4枚は当館蔵)の1枚と思われます。画面では、四大元素と四季がルイ14世、公爵夫人、またはふたりの間の子供のいずれかを中心人物として描かれています。刺繍はパリのサン・ジョセフ・ド・ラ・プロヴィダンス修道院で施されたと考えられています。
